“SOCIAL MEDIA IN TIME OF CRISIS” (2014), IN OKAY, A. (ED.), UNDERSTANDING COMMUNICATION IN THE NEW MEDIA ERA, ISTANBUL: THE JOURNALISTS AND WRITERS FOUNDATION PRESS
It is examined the rationale that current general crisis, which at the same time becomes a general crisis of the media system too, leads to such a change, in which the elites use the old media in defining the essence, the causes and the strategies of dealing with the crisis. On contrary new media become a field where elites’ views are not only challenged, but also a means for the users to adopt themselves in the new crisis environment. From this perspective, new media, and in particular social media, are not “alternative”, but they rather replace old media in the new crisis environment.
